Na:What brings me to teaching

This was my math teacher of high school whose name is Li.He had been my math teacher in high school since the second semester. Before he became my teacher, there was another teacher who I just remember love writing on the black board.Li had been my math teacher for two and a half year.I don't like math before. But I love math after he became my math teacher. He always teach in a funny way so that we can use to that difficult subject.I think a teacher who can students' interests from not like to love is a good teacher. The grades of math do really matter in China during the high school time.Li thought about what student really care in this subject.I want I can do the same thing that he did for the students.

I have many friends that dropped their school after middle school and choose not to go to the high school. After dropped of middle school, most of them can not have a good job and feel confused about life.I have talked with most of them and talked about this dropped of school thing. Most of them are just regret about that.I have always want to figure out what made them all to chose drop of the school.I found out there are three main reasons.First, about family. Most of their families don’t have time to take care of their study.Their parents just work all the time and they feel lack of care at home, they are just want to do somethings to get their parents’ attention. The second reason is that the teachers in school don’t care. Some of them don’t care i that students drop of the school or not.I think as a teacher should be more responsible to students and need to communicate with students. Most students want to leave school on impulse. They never know what they really want because during this period of being an adolescence everyone could feel confuse about their life or who they really are.

I have a three years old sister. After she was born, I want to be a teacher more.I want to be a guide for her whenever she is confused about anything.I wanna avoid the things that happened to my friends happen to her.I always teach her when I was home about words, animals or normal things. She is a great student. But I wanna know more about her.I wanna know how she think of the way that I teach and what is her interest of study. These questions are what I wanna learn when I graduated from university.I wanna know about how she will think or behavior during different period.

  1. Thank you for telling your story! One of my high school teachers told me that the greatest compliment a student can give is that they never liked his subject, but they liked his class. Reading what you wrote, I would take that a step further – the best thing is if they never liked the subject before, but they left the class with a love (or at least appreciation) for the subject. I’m glad your teacher was able to foster a love of math for you! Clearly, Li had a positive impact on your life. Do you remember any specific strategies he used?

    1. Hi Robin.I really do not know what the specific strategies he used. But I can tell you that he always can make math easier.Because I think math is so difficult for someone like me who did not love and learn math before. But Li always had patient for students like me and teach us about math using his own way.

  2. Thank you for sharing. I‘ve also met such a teacher, he not only taught us knowledge, but also inspired us a lot. I think the lecture-style plays an important role in teaching, because it can really make a student who is not engaged in a subject become interested in it. I also admire you for having a sister. Hopefully she'll grow up happy and you'll be able to make progress in exploring education methods.

  3. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed reading your story. Your comment about how teachers should be responsible and communicative to students is something that stood out to me and is really, really important. First of all, teachers are there to teach! As Mr. Coppola said in class on Monday, if students fail, that's really a reflection on you as a teacher. Sure, this isn't always the case, but if you're not communicative with your students and not doing everything you can to monitor, facilitate, and improve their learning, then you as a teacher are not doing your absolute best. I just completely agree with you saying this and I think it's an important thing to keep in our minds as we continue our careers.

  4. Na,
Thanks for sharing. Sometimes teachers do not know who the impact students' lives. As you mentioned, sometime students become disengaged with classes and teachers are not willing to make subjects relevant to them. Unfortunately, for this reason, as you stated, many students drop out of school and thus many opportunities for them to become successful vanish. I am glad that you want to be a teacher that makes a difference and also be there for your sister.

  5. I really enjoyed your post. I think it is important to remember that students are young people that are suseptible to a lot of influences; the choices they make during middle or high school may be ones they regret in the future. I also have friends who dropped out of high school and some regret their decision while some do not. I think that it is important for us as teachers to make sure that students know that they do have options and that it is never too late to get back on track in school. If a student wants to try then we, as educators, need to do everything in our power to help them.

  6. There's something poignant and beautiful in the way you share what brings you to teaching. Your second paragraph captures some of the real issues associated with the teaching profession--encouraging parental involvement, understanding the influence of our words and actions as teachers, and ensuring school is relevant for all learners so they actually want to stay in school. I appreciate how younger siblings (just like children) can inspire us to be better and do our part to make life better for the next generation. Having great teachers, like the way you described your Math teacher seems to be a universal experience which inspires many to get into the profession. Thank you for providing me with additional insights into how school is experienced by students who represent or bring a more international perspective!

  7. I totally understand your feeling when you talked about high school math classes in China. It was super hard when I was a high school student. As you said, teachers are playing an important role in not only teaching the subjects, but also giving students emotional support and encouraging them not to give up easily. I am glad you and I met these teachers that made us who we are today.

  8. Hello Na - thank you for sharing your story. I was really struck by your description of students from home that ended up dropping out of high school. I think that there are so many students with similar experiences, facing the same obstacles here in Chicago. I agree that our responsibility as teachers is to nurture and encourage our students and to help them learn to navigate through their many responsibilities.
