10/22 Post
As an English Language learner myself, I have a deep understanding of what the articles say. I have been studied English as a curriculum since I was in 3rd grade. But to be honest, I don’t think that I’m a good English learner. Because I still make many mistakes today. Sometimes I was kind of afraid of speaking English because of making mistakes. I think this situation can happen in many Chinese students. For example, many of you must heard about TOEFL test. There are four sections of the examination. Most of Chinese students can get high scores on reading, listening and writing. But when it comes to speaking, it becomes the weakest link of the examination. And this is due to the design and purpose of English course in China. When I was in school like 5 years ago or longer, the teachers are more focus on grammars more than others. We almost never get a chance to speak English. We were encouraged more study hard on reading and writing rather than speaking, that can help us get a high English score during the examination. But in my opinion, speaking is the most important part in English learning. By learning speaking English, students can practice their sense of English language and encourage them to do more study. And I think this is not only for English but also every language learning should pay more attention on oral languages.
I like that “ Culturally responsive instruction focuses on help students access and connect with their prior knowledge, tap into their interests, and use all of this to connect concepts they are learning in school to their everyday lives ( Klingner & Soltero-Gonzalez,2009 )”I think the part of culture in one language is ignored by some teachers. Each language has its own culture inside the core of it. I think it is an implicit part of languages. Many teachers are more engage with language itself and not to dig things inside the language. I think being a culturally responsive teacher would help more in students’ study on language. “Culturally responsive teachers facilitate achievement by making learning relevant for students. They are adept at using students’ experiences and interests as the basis for curricular connections (Ladson-billings,1994) “ Actually, I’m taking a course of CI 574 named Foundations Curriculum Studies. It is a difficult but educational course. It required us to be curriculum planner and design our own curriculum. What I was think exactly is a curriculum that using cultural elements to help Chinese students learning English. Cultural elements can arouse students' study interest and evoke students to think more. What I want to do is to make students not only focus on English linguistics, but also learning English by experiencing the language.
After reading the articles of this week, what I think most is the thing I should do as an English teacher in the future. What should I do in my class to help Students more engaged in learning English. Actually, those content made me think of an article that I read before. It is about if English teachers have the responsibilities to teach students standard English and incorrect every mistake that students made. From my point of view, as a language teacher, what I should do is more than just teach students how to read or write. I want they can be interested in the language that they are learning and not just to get a high score.
Here is a question: What would you do if you become a language teacher in the future or when you teach students who are not English speakers within your field? I would really want to hear opinions from everyone. I think that can help me a lot.
Thank you for your post!
ReplyDeleteYour point about learning how to speak English, or any other language, is so important. As you have said in relation to your experience in China, teachers often focus on grammar, rather than actually speaking the language. This is unfortunate because many would argue that speaking a language is the most important part of the process: isn't this, or shouldn't this be the ultimate goal of learning the language?
Personally, I understand Spanish pretty well, but I'm not perfect in it. However, my weakest area in Spanish is speaking it: I never really got the opportunity to do so, and it reflects in my lack of ability to have a conversation in Spanish. I definitely agree with you in saying teaching the oral part of the language is as important, if no more important, than teaching grammar and other components of a language.
In response to the question that you posed, I do not know exactly what I would do to teach students who are not English speakers within my field. I plan on getting an ESL endorsement for this exact reason, because it seems that it might be difficult to do this without being trained to do so. That being said, I think the very least we can do is talk to these students. If students who are not proficient in English are assigned complex texts, for example, it is unfair to them; maybe they are at the same reading level of students in terms of being able to comprehend the texts, but their limited understanding of the language can limit their ability to express their strengths. It can also limit the students' ability to participate in the classroom, so I think that this is something that is very important to address, although I will admit that I don't know exactly how to address this. It would definitely depend on their level of understanding of the language, though.
Thanks, Wilfredo.Thank you for your comments that give me a lot of help. I think the level of students is very important. I will consider that.
DeleteBeing someone who is bilingual (I am fluent in Spanish and English), and having peers who were fluent in a non-English language, I think I can relate to those students and make them feel comfortable enough to communicate with me and be better to help them learn. I think in this scenario, communication is the key, whether that be through writing or any other form of communication.
ReplyDeleteYour question made me think back to a book I read called "The Distance Between Us" by Reyna Grande where she mentioned what it felt like for her to be fluent in Spanish and transitioning into a school in the US. At first the transition was very hard, she was bullied and felt insecure, but eventually joined the band and learned to express herself through music.
Thank you for the comments,Belinda. I’m agree with you that communication between teacher and students is very important.
DeleteThank you for posting this week! I agree that actually speaking these languages is an important step in learning it. I am sure that as an ESL student, having teachers only focus on grammar and writing could be difficult. This sets the stage for you to continue not being able to speak well. This also sets up students to be embarrassed when they misspeak or mispronounce words in front of the class. In response to your question, I don't know specifics about how I would teach language. I do think it is important to raise up students who are emerging bilinguals and promote their own culture and language as well as teaching them English. How is this done? That I do not really have an answer to. I hope to come to this answer with further education and further teaching experience.

DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI think it is important to have in mind that everyone learns a language differently. I say this because of my own experience. That is why is important to know and understand the background of your students. That is something to keep in mind not only when teaching ELs but all students.
Thank you for the comments.
DeleteHey Na, thank you for your posting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion, as English learners, it is a pity that we do not have the English learning environment in China. And many teacher said it is useful to watch English movies and listening songs to create an English environment. Though what they said is really meaningful, it is still do not have much improved. And many teachers often concerned about the score, the text and ignore the listening and speaking. So, when students even me, meet with foreigners they are afraid to speak or even do not know how to express themselves they just know the felling but do not know hoe to present. I have dreamed of my future class with English environment, students communicate with English in my English class but what parents and school care about is the texts and their score. Even your students speak well but when they get a poor grade they may blame you. So, it is really hard to have this progress. I think what we Chinese English educators should do id to speak as much as English as possible and let the students follow you and not only care about their reading and writing but also care about their speaking and listening. Text is one thing but communication is slap very important.
Thanks ,Xuezhi.
DeleteI like how you included the quote about how it is important to incorporate students prior knowledge when we teach. I think this is important for many reasons, for example, engaging with a students prior knowledge can increase their engagement, they will be more interested in the learning because it is easier to learn something you have a background in. Also, this could help increase student confidence, because they will feel knowledgeable, so much of learning is the confidence that you are capable of learning.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Destiny.
DeleteHi Na Hao,
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you mentioned the TOEFL exam and your own experiences with the English language. I understand that learning a new language can be quite difficult. I have been currently taking French for the past five years. My dream was to always go to Paris and study abroad. Last summer, I got the opportunity to study abroad in France but I was having such a difficult time adjusting to the culture and language. I had a horrible time because I could not speak the language properly. I knew how to read signs on streets or the newspaper because that's what we focused the most in class. But, we never focused much on the speaking aspect and it was truly challenging for me. I kept going back to English and hoping that the citizens of Paris would understand my English. To answer your question, I believe as educators we have to be mindful to other students who are from different countries and don't speak English. An ESL endorsement can be beneficial as well when helping these students that are from a different culture.
